¡¦About transposing instruments
Trumpet, clarinet, saxophone, alto horn, and French horn are transposed instruments. It is necessary to know the relationship between the notes written on the score and the actual pitch that are produced.
In brass band notation, which is mainly used in the UK, trombones, euphoniums, and tubas are also treated as transposed instruments.

¡¦The tone of each instrument
Listening to CDs and watching videos of famous performances of each instrument can help students learn not only the tone but also the body movements when playing, which can be a useful reference for instruction.

¡¦Points to remember when teaching each instrument
Each instrument has its own difficult points.
All brass instruments produce sound in the same way, but each has its own challenges due to differences in range and structure.

Problems with the Trumpet
Problems with the Horn
Problems with the Trombone
Problems with the Tuba

Woodwind instruments have their own unique problems due to differences in fingering, etc.
I think the clarinet is particularly problematic.

Problems with the Clarinet

There is no need for teachers to actually play and practice, but knowing what is difficult about each instrument is very helpful when giving instruction.
If a student cannot play well, it is necessary to judge whether the phrases that are so difficult that it is understandable that they cannot play it, or it should be able to do.
For example, a lip slur pattern can be played without sheet music on a brass instrument, but it's quite difficult at first with woodwind instruments.
It is difficult to play slurred phrases well on a trombone, even though it is easy to play on other instruments.
For woodwind instruments, the degree of fatigue does not vary depending on the range, but for brass instruments, high ranges can cause fatigue in a short time.
If you know the characteristics of each instrument, you will not push your students too hard.
- Basics of conducting
In school bands, you can practice the same pieces many times, so students will play no matter how you conduct, but it is best if you can conduct in a way that is easy to understand. Please also study basic ways of conducting and giving them signals.
Maintaining a certain tempo is surprisingly difficult. Use a metronome to check the tempo if necessary.
- Teaching methods
Teachers who has experience playing an instrument during their student days, should also study teaching methods again.
There were some junior high school band that were doing strange practices that seemed pointless.
Whether the practice methods you experienced as a student are reasonable or not, if you check out various instruction books, you may find some good methods you didn't know before.
