Without a goal, no one will be enthusiastic about practicing.
The goal of a band is to perform in front of an audience.
If you have the opportunity to play it, you should not miss it, if you don't, make it yourself.
One thing that you can be done immediately is a concert for parents and friends of students who play in a band. If the number of performers is small, the concert can be held in the music room.
No matter how small the concert, you will not be playing just one piece, so you will need to prepare several pieces. Having each instrument perform or a small group perform will stimulate the members. If there is a student who can play well, you can include a solo piece.
If there is an opportunity to play the school song at the entrance ceremony, opening ceremony, closing ceremony, graduation ceremony, sports day, etc., let the band accompany it.
The more pieces the band play, the better the band will be. Also, playing the same piece in various places is a good experience.
At the end of the school year, it can be fun to play all the pieces the band have played that year. You may notice that your band have improved in many ways since the last time the band played.
In addition to one school, try to plan joint concert with nearby elementary schools, junior high schools in the school district, and other groups.
There are surprisingly few concerts with chorus and bands. At a Christmas concert with chorus and bands can be played a variety of pieces.
In European brass bands, it seems that three generations of a family play in one band. In Japan, elementary school band activities have been going on for over 60 years, and if there are more opportunities for second and third generations to play together in the future, this type of band activity will truly gain acceptance.
Planning and realizing a concert¡¡is quite hard. There are many other difficult aspects besides the performance. But I think there is a lot to gain from it for both students and instructors.
